SUMMARY:

The manager of manufacturing engineering position oversees the development and implementation of manufacturing processes to maintain proper product functionality as well as cost efficiency; ensures the engineering team and other manufacturing departments work together cohesively and is responsible for the development of equipment to aid in the manufacturing process; leads and directs the work of assigned manufacturing engineers and project engineers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises, instructs, and ensures the accuracy of all manufacturing engineering activities.
  • Recommends methods and processes in production to improve workflow rate and efficiency.
  • Maintains departmental day-to-day manufacturing engineering activities; monitors and prioritizes the assignment, workflow and scheduling of those activities.
  • Provides manufacturing operational support.
  • Supervises the modification of production processes, and the assessment of manufacturing abilities.
  • Contributes to the Engineering Design process, and the new product introduction timelines.
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Oversees the design of products or systems for manufacturability for new or complex designs such as hand-held laser products, rugged military housings, and compact opto-electronic devices that include state of the art mechanical, optical, and high heat transfer materials.
  • Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Drives the company growth plan with detailed manpower planning and strong project management.
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate system malfunctions.
  • Directs department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.
  • Adheres to and improves upon the product development process.
  • Works closely with the Operations, Engineering, Quality, and Production Managers.
  • Resolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Analyzes technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects.
  • Confers with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations, and develops recommendations accordingly.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
  • Must love guns.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position manages all employees of the technical operations department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Technical project management experience
  • Experience with a prior emphasis on product design, including designing for manufacture
  • Experience with Opto-electronic mechanical design (battery based designs a plus).
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing methods
  • Military product experience preferred.
  • Experience in working with Operations.
  • Experience with adherence to Mil-specs a plus.
  • Experience with Statistical Analysis Methods
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma Concepts.
  • Previous supervisory/managerial experience in a high volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experienced in New Product Introduction methodology.
  • Experience in design for NC machining.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to draft customer and board level presentations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must be a U.S. Person and qualify for a security clearance.

COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • (Solidworks, Catia, ProE, Solid Edge or Unigraphics etc.)
  • PDM such as Enterprise
  • Statistical Software (i.e. MiniTab)
  • ERP and related systems (i.e. Unipoint QA Software)
